get it. time now to check in with lauren demarco to see what is happening on the roads on this early, hot, hot, morning. >> good morning. that will impact the rush. north glebe road at washington boulevard, the intersection is closed. you want to avoid that and follow police direction in the area. also dealing with an incident georgia avenue, 97 in both directions closed at shorefield road because of a broken water main. let's take a live look out there right now. up past the pentagon towards the 14th street bridge, nothing in your way. no problems reported on i-95 in virginia. smooth trip around the beltway both in virginia and maryland. 66 running incident-free. we have a camera on 270 as well as you make the trip out of frederick down towards germantown. it looks like it is frozen there. you can tell that there is light volume and no delays at

of 75-year-old gary hanson. officers canvassed the area around warning neighbors to stay indoors. police are looking for a suspect in a hammer attack in culpeper, virginia. they are searching for freddie hernandez. investigators say he approached the man at a business on air park drive monday looking for a job and when the victim turned him down, hernandez hit him with a hammer several times and took off. the victim was hospitalized for a short time but should be okay. inspectors will head to a local park today to look into what caused a heavy tree branch to fall on several people. matt ackland has more. >> reporter: it was a huge, heavy limb that broke free from this old tree crashing down on a group of children playing. >> we evaluate many kids but we ended up transporting three. they had some serious injuries. >> reporter: dozens of children came to the park today for a bible camp field trip. the group had just finished up a prayer and the kids started playing and the tree limb fell. >> they just wanted to get the kids to the hospital. >> reporter: bill phillips got here as rescuers were treating the injured. >> one of the folk who was here with the kids said that they were here just march is single file under the branch and when it fell, unfortunately, they were more on the outside of the branch so that they didn't come down with the heaviest part of the branch. >> reporter: the injured were rushed to two local hospitals.

officials say a 17-year-old and a 51-year-old supervising the kids sustained serious head injuries. >> they indicated the organizers and the adults here said there was no warping, no cracking, no swaying or anything that would give any indication that the branch was about to fall. in other news, police are searching for a man who broke into an apartment in lorton and sexually assaulted a woman inside. the alleged attack happened early saturday morning on lewis chapel circle. the woman was sexually assault and the man left. police say there were children inside the apartment but they were not hurt. turning to the debate over raising the debt ceiling. there are now no less than three separate plans in congress tobudget. a house republican plan called cut, cap and balance is dead on arrival in the senate but the so-called group of six senators claim they have a bipartisan plan that picks spending cuts

with increases taxes which the president has insisted on. >> we will have a bipartisan group of senators who agree with that balanced approach and we've got the american people who agree with that balanced approach. >> but the group of six plan is a broad outline while it slashes deficits by nearly $4 trillion lowers overall tax rates, it lacks specifics and map senators doubt there is time to push the plan through congress before the country's borrowing authority expires august 2nd. is the leader of the taliban dead in up next, the latest on the rumors. i was absolutely shocked, appalled and ashamed when i heard about the case only two week ago. >> some unexpected fireworks as rupert murdoch testified before parliament about the british hacking scandal. we have more of what he had to say.

the taliban are denying their leader is dead. a spokesman for the taliban says there is no truth to the report that he has died. they claim that i text message sent to journalists was fake and was the result of a phone hack. rumors have spread that he died after a text message allegedly sent from a spokesman announced his death. two american citizens are charged with asking as agents to the pakistani government. said faye lives in fairfax and is the director of the kashmiri american council. kashmiri is the disputed

territory between india and pakistan. a second american living in pakistan is also charged. now to the british phone hacking scandal. the news corp. chairman testified before parliament answering questions about the scandal. murdoch told british lawmakers he was ashamed of what has happened but said he is not to blame. he went on to reject reports that phones of 9-11 victims have been hacked. >> we have seep no evidence of that at all an as far as we know the fbi haven't either. if they do, we will treat it exactly the same way as we treat it here and i cannot believe it happened from anyone in america. >> two and a half hours into the testimony, a protester hurled a pie of what was apparently shaving cream. a former news of the world editor denied paying police for

information. today, prime minister david cameron faces lawmakers. under pressure over the widening crisis, he cut short his african trip and returned home last night. news corp. is the parent company of fox 5. the last place the space shuttle is headed is home. atlantis undocked from the international space station tuesday. the shuttle and its crew of four are scheduled to arrive in florida early tomorrow morning. touchdown back here onering will mark the end of nasa's 30- year shuttle program. the atlantis crew delivered a year's worth of supplies to the space station and is bringing home tons of trash. a show of defiance from leslie johnson. up next on fox 5 morning news. >> i really considered the distraction. >> why do you think she is coming still? >> out of spite. >> she showed up at work after pleading guilty to corruption

particularly when you factor in the humidity. manassas, not checking in this morning. 72 in fredericksburg. 70 in winchester and martinsburg. the pop-up thunderstorms have dissipated during the evening hours. should be more sunshine. it will be on the hot side once again with highs in the mid- 90s. still a lot of humidity. our winds have been out of the south. it will be a very uncomfortable day and we've been talking about all that heat out west for the past several days. that is on the move and with the jet stream changing gears here a little bit, that heat will be slipping into the washington area. we are off and running with highs expected to be close to 100 degrees. because of that, the national weather service has already issued an excessive heat watch for all the counties in red here for tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night and that is because the fear is that that the combination of high temperatures near 100 a lot of humidity, it will feel like 110

jack johnson, the former county executive, are waiting sentencing after pleading guilty to charges of public corruption. some county residents watching the action in the county administration building were embarrassed and upset. >> i really consider it a distraction. >> reporter: why do you think she is coming still? >> out of spite. >> her family is hurting. i'm sure she is hurting and i'm sure the council is hurting. i know the constituents of bridge county are actually hurting as well. >> reporter: some council members and county officials seemed somewhat surprised by johnson's defiance. >> we tried some of the ways that county car, cell phone, computer, so forth, we tried to limit those things but, you know, the state law says that she does have a right to be here. >> i think that people are eager to move forward. all of us are eager to move forward to have this behind us. >> reporter: but not everybody was outraged that johnson had the gall to be here. >> she has a right to be here
